Clément Golliet: “The Stitch During Exertion”

The sore point sometimes felt in the abdomen during exertion is called a side stitch. It is also sometimes referred to as ETAP (exercise related transient abdominal pain). Its origins are various and it can create a discomfort which can become a stabbing pain either on the left or right side of the ribcage or in the middle of the stomach. In some instances the side stitch is not only caused by the reaction of the body during exertion, but also by the way people invest in their sport.

The statement is in 2 halves. In previous newsletters, we have looked at the first half which is about developing the ‘person’. The second half deals with developing the ‘player’. This month, we will look at the final aspect which is the “Effective Strokes” characteristic. We will define it as: “Able to execute strokes that have the appropriate direction, distance, height, spin and speed to perform the intended tactic successfully with efficiency.”

Filip Peliwo: “Fitness can get you through”

I was always really, really competitive as a kid. I hated losing so much and I wanted to win at everything, even if it was a random game with friends at the age of eight or younger. I’ve always had that competitive aspect in my personality and that’s helped me every time I go out and play a tennis match. I fight as hard as I can, do everything I can to win and that is what got me through a lot of matches at the junior majors last year. Even when things weren’t going so well, I managed to find a way to just grind through matches.

Oncourt: “The ACE 2008 Team Tryouts Overview”

The ACE 2008 Team Tryouts were held last weekend at all 3 ACE Tennis locations: Toronto Tennis City, Astra Tennis Club and Cedar Springs Health, Racquet and Sports Club. The 2008 ACE Team concept is a talent identification program aimed at 5 year old kids who will turn 6 years old in 2014. This program is an experimental one to test some aspects of player development in tennis. The concept is to group a selection of players in a structured 30 week team environment in which they will be exposed to a scientific approach to player development following Tennis Canada guidelines and the ACE Tennis Mantra.
