Michael Chang says his relations with Chinese tennis in the run-up to the Beijing Games remains strong despite a break with top player Peng Shuai over training methods. “We would butt heads on the time she put in to training, she probably thought that I was too strict,” said the 1989 Roland Garros winner.
Chang said that the Chinese number two behind Li Na “needs someone to travel with her. I just don’t have the time to do that.” Chang is set to open a tennis academy in the economic boom area just north of Hong Kong.
Chang called his relationship with the Chinese tennis federation “pretty good,” adding that he is still hoping to work with the host nation at the Games.
“My heart is with Chinese tennis, if there’s an opportunity to help the team then I’ll take advantage of that.”
The noted grinder said that Chinese players could do with more of the work ethic which helped his game. “You prepare yourself as best you can so you are 100 percent off the court and when you go out there you play 100 percent on the court.
“If I was more heavily involved with the Olympic team it could be a chance for them to do well and maybe win multiple medals. There are things that could be improved.”
