Sarah Hunter (Surrey, BC) was recognized as the Canadian Wheelchair Sports Association’s female athlete of the year on Saturday, as she was presented with the award at the CWSA’s banquet dinner during their annual general meeting in Ottawa. Currently ranked world No. 5 in the quad category, Hunter faced an uphill battle back to the top of the sport this season after recovering from a severe shoulder injury sustained in 2011, which led to her dropping off the world rankings in 2012.

“I am honoured to receive this award,” Hunter said. “It took me by surprise and to be quite fair there are many deserving athletes across the country that would have been excellent choices. I would like to thank the CWSA for their recognition and I would also like to thank my ‘team’ of professionals whom have been instrumental in my success on the court.”

The 2013 season marked a highly successful year for Hunter, as her No. 5 position brings her into striking distance of her all-time best No. 2 world ranking from 2003. The future holds a lot of promise for the 10-time Canadian national champion.
