__________

Daniel Nestor is about to enter his 24th year as a professional tennis player. He has accomplished about all there is to accomplish in doubles – winning each of the four Grand Slams, the nine Masters 1000s, a gold medal at the (2000) Olympics, a total of 81 tour titles and holding the No. 1 doubles ranking for an overall 113 weeks.

In 2013, Nestor began the year partnering Mahesh Bhupathi and played five tournaments with the Indian veteran, then 12 with Robert Lindstedt as well as four with Leander Paes, two with Vasek Pospisil and one each with Lukasz Kubot and Julian Knowle.

He won a single title – Winston-Salem with Paes – and was runner-up twice, in Barcelona with Lindstedt and Vienna with Knowle.

It was a very inconsistent year, with his end-of-season ranking (No. 25) dropping out of the top-10 for the first time since 2000.

He also lost to fellow Canadians Milos Raonic twice – in Indian Wells (Feliciano Lopez) and Monte Carlo (Bernard Tomic) and Vasek Pospisil (Lindstedt) once in Shanghai.

But there were Davis Cup highs as he and Pospisil beat Italians Daniele Bracciali and Fabio Fognini 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 3-6, 15-13 in the World Group quarter-finals in Vancouver in April and then Ilija Bozoljac and Nenad Zimonjic 6-7(6), 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(5), 10-8 in the semi-finals in Belgrade in September.

Nestor also became the only player in the open era to play an event 25 times in a row (Rogers Cup/Canadian Open) when he and Lindstedt reached the semi-finals in Montreal in August.

TEBBUTT TUESDAY spoke with the 41-year-old doubles maestro last week.

He won a single title – Winston-Salem with Paes – and was runner-up twice, in Barcelona with Lindstedt and Vienna with Knowle.
