Melissa Pine has come a long way from hitting tennis balls off a wall in Tony Manning’s basement.

“Tony is a legendary coach for developing young Newfoundland players,” the 35-year-old Newfoundlander said.

“And when we got good enough, we progressed to the Holy Heart of Mary gym/tennis court,” she added with a laugh.

She’s come a long way since then in the sport she loves.

Pine, who grew up in what’s now the Town of Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove, was recently named the Women’s Tennis Association’s (WTA) tournament director of the season-ending WTA Championship for the top-ranked players on the tour.

The WTA, of course, is the governing body for women’s professional tennis.

In her new role, which is effective immediately, Pine will oversee strategic planning and delivery of the event as it heads to Singapore in 2014. She will also work to grow the WTA business in Asia and play a central role in establishing a new Singapore office for the organization.

The tennis organization is currently seeking a new chief executive to oversee its work in the region and Pine will work closely with that individual, as well as existing WTA partners in China and Singapore, to generate new revenue streams.

Pine joined the WTA in 2008 as manager of strategic projects, working across a range of departments including marketing, tennis operations, business development and digital media.
