Pierre ‘The Bear’ Lamarche: “The Surfing Bear”

The Bear is hibernating in the Dominican Republic. I am not living a midlife crisis but coming to terms with the concept that my health might determine the quality of my future life and my ability to continue doing what I love best, working with tennis, kids, friends, family and to resume playing the sport I love. I have taken a page out of Karl Hale’s transformation as an Ironman and have committed to getting healthier.

Robert Bettauer: “A Transformation of Canadian Tennis”

I’ve needed a day or so to let Canada’s fantastic win over Italy settle and to really reflect on what it means to so many of us for whom tennis is a way of life. I started playing tennis in the 60’s, played Davis Cup in the 70’s, helped coach the team in the 80’s, managed the team in the 90’s and have covered the team as a television analyst since.

Spine stability is a widely misunderstood topic and its concept is often misused. Most of the time exercises are done on the assumption that they will help athletes reinforce their back, but in fact it is the opposite that happens. I will try here to define what spine stability means, review the mechanisms that lead to injuries and the importance of maintaining a tight torso.
