Soufiane Azargui: First Loss of the Season and Beating the Big H

Written by: Soufiane Azargui

__________

***19 year old Soufiane Arzagui came to Toronto from Morocco at the age of 10 and a half. Over the next 7 years, Soufiane developed as an excellent tennis player winning singles and doubles titles at the national and ITF level as well as maintaining a high academic level at Bateman High School in Burlington. After six years at the ACE tennis Academy he fulfilled his objective of receiving a scholarship to an Ivy League school, Brown University in September of 2010.  Soufiane will be blogging us on a regular basis about his freshman season.***

__________

Dartmouth

We came out sluggish against Dartmouth, dropping the doubles point and not really putting up much fight in the process. Brandon and I dropped our match 8-4 to a senior and sophomore. In the singles, we came out with three quick wins and had freshman Sam Fife up a set and break. Suddenly, he just cramped! It was a huge shock and nothing you could do to stop the process. He won just another game in the rest of the match. The hope for the win rested on my shoulders and those of Tom Deighton, playing 5 and 6 respectively. We were up 3-2 and needed just one more match to put this thing away and grab our second consecutive Ivy victory after the Columbia craziness last weekend. I was hampered earlier in doubles by a pinched nerve in the neck and a sprained ankle still ailing from Columbia’s match but that’s no excuse. My opponent beat me fair and square, making under 10 unforced errors and hitting all his shots today. Too good. Match tied 3-3 and my first loss all season !!!!! :( Tommy unfortunately lost in straights with a break each set. Dartmouth takes us 4-3 and we are stunned by the loss. I blame myself for that one although my teammates say I have nothing to be blamed for.

Harvard

With the pinched nerve in my neck and sprained ankle still hampering me greatly, I told Coach I couldn’t go today which was a very difficult decision for me to take. I want to be out there playing. But I told myself I was gonna be the loudest cheering teammate out there even if we were at Harvard. My teammates came through and for the first time in their careers, senior captains Charlie Posner and Kendrick Au beat the big H 4-3 !!!!!!!! They snatched the victory in exciting fashion with Kendrick breaking down their big freshman Casey McMaster. We all rushed the court and celebrated like we won the title. Everybody wants to beat Harvard! WE dropped the doubles point but bounced back with singles wins from Brandon Burke, Sam Fife, Kendrick Au, and Tom Deighton :) !

Go Bruno, only Yale Left !! Let’s finish the year in style!
