The Tennis Yukon team from Whitehorse traveled to the Alaska capital and defeated the team from Juneau to claim the Capital Cup for the second time since 2008.

The Whitehorse team was made up of head coach Jan Polivka, coach Mike Russo, adults Anne Copland, Stacy Lewis, Keith Halliday and Ken Liao and juniors Kieran Halliday, Ryan Lane, Roan Evans-Ehricht, Khang Pham, Trygg Jensen, Alex Roberts, Andrew Roberts, Louis Kedziora, Aline Halliday, Pascale Halliday, Ewan Halliday, Jaxson Fitzsimmons and Prism Sasworksky.

Matches (singles and doubles of pro sets to eight) were held every day for a week with each game won counting towards the team total. Whitehorse won 607-589 to claim the Cup.

Polivka and Russo led the Yukon contingent as each lost only one match during the week.

Stacy Lewis, the president of Tennis Yukon, says the Cup began as a friendly competition in the early 1990s but was dormant until reinvigorated in 2008 by Tennis Yukon.

“The challenge occurs twice a year, indoors in Juneau in the spring, and outdoors in Whitehorse in the summer,” says Lewis.

“Thanks very much to all our tennis friends in Juneau for making it such a great event,” Lewis adds. “Juneau will be in Whitehorse this summer to try and win the Cup back!”
