Soufiane Azargui: Binghamton – Bryant – UConn!

Written by: Soufiane Azargui

***19 year old Soufiane Arzagui came to Toronto from Morocco at the age of 10 and a half. Over the next 7 years, Soufiane developed as an excellent tennis player winning singles and doubles titles at the national and ITF level as well as maintaining a high academic level at Bateman High School in Burlington. After six years at the ACE tennis Academy he fulfilled his objective of receiving a scholarship to an Ivy League school, Brown University in September of 2010.  Soufiane will be blogging us on a regular basis about his freshman season.***

This past weekend, we had a triple header with one match on Saturday, against our toughest team, and two matches back to back on Sunday against beatable teams. This was an opportunity for us to capitalize on our momentum as of late and continue this good trend towards Ivy Season where it all counts! Binghamton went 6-1 last year against the Ivies including a convincing win over us in the process. This fueled many upperclassmen’s fire as well as the newcomers who wanted to make a statement that this will not be happening again. We came out firing, sweeping the doubles, with Brandon and I winning our match 8-5 against their #1 team. Singles was a little different story. Their number one was ranked so he played a great match and beat our 1 player. Our senior captain lost in a tight three setter 6-4 in the third at #4 singles. This gave them a 2-1 lead but those would be the last points they would win as we won all 4 remaining singles matches to win the dual match 5-2 ! I got an opportunity to play singles because our regular #6 unfortunately had a sinus infection all week; I won my match 6-0 7-5 to tack on a point to our win.

We came out fired up against Bryant the next morning, riding a high from our victory the day before over a very solid team that had beat us. We swept all three doubles and took care of all our singles pretty handily, not losing too many games even though most of our starting lineup got to sit out and rest that match. I played #3 singles winning pretty convincingly 6-1 6-1 as we rolled to 7-0 win over Bryant University.

The afternoon was a different affair. I was scheduled to play only doubles, which we managed to eke out 8-7 (4) against a determined team. We snatched the doubles point, but we could sense their enthusiasm and determination to beat us in singles so we came out strong, winning all but one match in straight sets and taking away any hope of them coming back right from the start. Brown Bears win 7-0 and climb to 13-2 on the year ! Here we go Bruno! Let’s get after that Ivy Title in a couple weeks!
